Cockroach Identification & Prevention

What are cockroaches?

Did you know that a handful of cockroaches have given all cockroaches a bad rap? Lucky for us, most of the thousands of species of cockroaches living worldwide live far away from people. If you have spotted cockroaches in your home, they are likely one of the following species:

  • American cockroach
  • Brown-banded cockroach
  • German cockroach
  • Oriental cockroach

Cockroaches vary in color and size, but most have a familiar flat oval shape and the ability to use their six legs to move quickly. The exception to the rule is the Oriental cockroaches; they have a more beetle-like appearance and are much more slow-moving.

Are cockroaches dangerous?

If you could only keep one pest from entering your home, most people would put the cockroach at the top of their list. Cockroaches are disease-spreading, scavenging pests and pose a significant danger when living with or near people. They live in areas of filth and are in constant contact with parasites, bacteria, and disease-causing pathogens. When cockroaches move into our homes, they contaminate food, counters, tables, utensils, dishes, and more with things like E. Coli and Salmonella that can make us ill.

The pheromone trails they use to communicate with each other create unpleasant odors in our homes. Their shed skins and excrement put allergens in the air that cause breathing difficulties, skin rashes, and can trigger asthma attacks.

Why do I have a cockroach problem?

The most important thing to remember when it comes to cockroaches is that they can be introduced or find their way into any of our Nashville homes. Cockroaches can move into our homes by crawling through spaces in exterior walls, vents, or inside secondhand items like appliances, electronics, and furniture.

Cockroaches are scavengers, and anywhere that food is prepared or stored (homes, restaurants, schools, dormitories, apartment buildings, grocery stores) can become a place where cockroaches thrive. Moisture and warmth are other things that attract the attention of these pests.

Where will I find cockroaches?

Cockroaches in our Nashville homes gather in places that provide them warmth, moisture, and of course, food! In our homes, cockroaches dig through the garbage, chew holes in food packaging, forage through dirty dishes, and drink from clogged drains, sinks, and leaky pipes.

Cockroaches typically hide during the day and are active during the evening hours. They will hide in dark, out-of-the-way spaces like basements, crawl spaces, the backs of cabinets, drawers, and behind appliances. If you see a cockroach scurry across the surface of your home, know that there are hundreds more hiding nearby that you didn't see!
